Politini 2004 Burley Shed King Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Quite where Politini pulled this estate-grown wine from I'm not sure, but it's not a good idea to look a gift horse in the mouth. The wine has a particularly good hue for age - remarkable; likewise, the freshness of the varietal fruit, and even more, the price. If all this were not enough, the packaging is elegant. It hardly needs be said that it's ready right now.

Brown Brothers Pinot Noir Chardonnay Pinot Meunier NV

At the top end, Australia's cutting edge bubblies, like Arras, come up against the French originals in both price and quality. At the bottom, any number of clean, fresh, but fairly bland bubblies do the trick. In the middle ground, Brown Brothers impresses because skilled winemaking adds a patina of complex flavours and textures around exactly the right type of fruit flavours. This comes from the classic Champagne varieties grown in cooler parts of Victoria's King Valley and Whitlands Plateau.

Chrismont NV La Zona King Valley Prosecco

"In 2007 Arnie and Jo Pizzini planted the Italian white variety, prosecco, in their vineyard at Cheshunt, in Victoria's King Valley. With it they emulate the light, delicate dry sparkling wines made with the variety in north-eastern Italy.

Chrismont La Zona King Valley Prosecco NV

"A wonderful array of aromas in the bouquet showing green apple, musk sticks, quince and faint marzipan. The palate is teeny-tiny and laced delicately - more appley flavours but crisp and bristling with frisky bubbles. Fine. 90/100 "

Chrismont 2011 La Zona King Valley Arneis

"Arnie Pizzini and his team at Chrismont in Victoria's King Valley turn out an excellent range of wines, all at eminently reasonable prices, but this one leapt out at me. It's a delightfully different style, made from the northern Italian grape arneis, that is beautifully fresh in its youth with crisp green apple and pear notes, the merest hint of honey and some attractive crispness and minerality on the finish.

Pizzini Sangiovese 2009

Typical bright and juicy cherries and lively tannin/acid crunch here. Not over-complicated and very much in the style of the previous releases. A staple wine for sure. 90/100

Pizzini Il Barone 2006

Il Barone heads the most alluring set of wines I've seen from the heights of the King Valley. Cabernet, Shiraz and friends unite in a bright, crunchy, textural wine of exotic complexity. 96/100

Pizzini Nebbiolo 2008

Nebbiolo has a bit of a cult thing about it, and all the reasons are on display here; its lightish garnet in colour, it smells of warm rocks, garden herbs, fennel and florals. It has trademark true grit in the mouth, fullish tannins yet not too overwhelming, balanced fruit bite, and savoury tobacco-like interest in the finish. Lots going on. 94/100

Chrismont La Zona Prosecco NV

"It's grown at about 300 metres above sea level on vines that are now nearly ten years old. It now comes in a proprietary 'King Valley' prosecco bottle, which is lovely to see - a real sign of confidence/harmony for the region. Reckon they are bang on with this release. It's fine and crisp but not at all lacking in flavour. Red apples galore. Some bready complexity. More than an ounce of finesse. More-ish lisp of fruit sweetness. Tick tick tick."90 points.
